On May 8, 2003 Leadership Waupaca
County observed the graduation of its fifth class. Leadership Waupaca
County is a 9 month program where participants learn about leadership
and Waupaca County. Meeting once a month for day long sessions
participants learned about county and city government, economic
development, youth issues, education, environmental issues. The
capstone session focused on state government where participants stayed
overnight and spent a grueling day meeting state officials. In
addition, individuals must participate in a group project focusing on
current issues of local and statewide importance. This year's class
projects focused on the state budget crisis, comprehensive "smart
growth" planning and youth issues. Three of this year's participants
are tied to the city of Waupaca organization. Two are city alderman.
The first is Laura Iverson. Laura has been on Council for about a year
and half. She is the Executive Director of the local Red Cross
Chapter. The other alderman is Paul Mayou. Paul has been on Council
for 2 years. He and his wife Paulette own and operate the Waupaca Dairy
Queen. The third participant is Margaret "Peg" Burrington. Peg is the
Waupaca Library's Asst. Library Director. Congratulations to all three
individuals for their participation in a great leadership program.
