Strawberry Fest to remain in Downtown
Plans for this year’s Strawberry Fest have been finalized. Because of the construction that was slated for the City Square and the surrounding streets in downtown we realized that we would not be able to hold Strawberry Fest in the downtown. Closing additional streets and parking lots would have been needed just to accommodate the event and then where would everyone park, around 200 vendors and the 9,000 to 10,000 who attend the event? We also took into account that the downtown business appreciates the traffic the event draws but we knew we had no other choice but to look for a different location. We considered a number of choices and determined that the Waupaca High School grounds would be our best bet. Thanks to Superintendent Greg Nyen, the School Board and staff for working with us and helping us in all of the preplanning.
In a meeting in March we were told that the Request for Bids for doing the City Square were delayed in being sent out. With that information we had a meeting with Mayor Brian Smith to see if he would consider delaying a construction start following the Strawberry Fest date. He agreed to discuss it with City staff. We were notified later the same day that Mayor Smith and City Staff agreed to stipulating in the requests for bids that construction could not begin until June 18, 2018.
We are ‘Berry’ happy to let you and the community know that Strawberry Fest 2018 will be in its original place in downtown Waupaca.
We want to thank Superintendent Greg Nyen, the School Board and staff for working with us and helping us in all of the preplanning for using the School grounds. And thanks to Mayor Smith and City staff for their help in adjusting their plans to accommodate Strawberry Fest.
See you in downtown Waupaca for the 29th annual Strawberry Fest, June 16th!
